I was reminded of this while reading “ Fight Night,” the latest novel by Miriam Toews, which can veer from endearing to obvious to moving in a single chapter. But underneath Ted’s chipper demeanor, there’s trauma he’s working through, real meat in the script - including his father’s suicide. After an exceptionally exhausting two years that felt more like two decades, people need to laugh and be reminded of what’s worth fighting for, even if the feeling comes candy-coated and delivered by a character who leans on one-liners like a soccer player with a shin splint. He was genuinely protective of her without being overbearing. He was even understanding as to why she kept things from him. He was calm and reasonable when she finally told him everything. And yet, he never pressured her to tell him. He was drawn to Rose from the beginning but also knew that she was keeping things from him. She was also inventive and proactive and didn’t sit around waiting for stuff to happen.ĭav Jallan wasn’t bad either. There were things about her that were done well, for instance, I liked that she was cautious even with her rescuers. Throughout the book, there was also never a sense of true danger, I was never worried about the two main characters which lowered the stakes considerably. ![]() It was jarring because as far as introductions though, it’s a bumpy method.
